Hybrid wolves rescued in Orange County, taken to Austin Zoo....

Four exotic animals abandoned in Orange County after Hurricane Ike are in a new home. Ashley Gaston reports, the hybrid wolves have been taken to the Austin Zoo...

It was the last time four hybrid wolves were able to prance around a large, fenced-in area behind an abandoned trailer in Orange County...

Deputy Constable Dee Aven had been feeding the wolves since their owner left them after he evacuated for Hurricane Ike...

They were bred with dogs to create the hybrids...

"A lot of hustle and bustle today, and they've been nervous all morning," said Aven.

Aven says the wolves usually aren't afraid of people, but she says they sensed something was different...

"They're gonna be fearful," said Max Mixson, the manager of the Humane Society of Southeast Texas...

"The wolves here are mixed with dogs. We don't know exactly the temperament is gonna be, especially under a stressful situation."

Mixson says transporting these animals is a sensitive operation. That's why several agencies throughout the state are involved to ensure the health and well being of the wolves

One by one, the Humane Society of Southeast Texas, the Orange County Sheriff's Office and employees of the Austin Zoo removed the wolves from their den and brought them inside this trailer for testing and immunizations...

"They weren't vicious but they were definitely wary of us, our presence in there, they were uptight," said Mixson...

An attitude Mixson says will change once the wolves are in their new home at the Austin Zoo...

"It's really wonderful because they're all going to the same place as a pack, a society, a family," said Aven...

A place where the wolves will enjoy an acre to run free, and more people can enjoy the exotic animals in their natural habitat...

Mixson says the wolves are in good condition...

They'll join another female hybrid wolf already at the Austin Zoo...
