Bangladesh go down fighting: Lanka clinch Tri-Nation Cup....


Sri Lanka clinched the Grameenphone Tri-Nation Cup when they beat Bangladesh by two wickets in a hard-fought final match at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Friday...

Sent into bat first, Bangladesh scored 152 off 49.4 overs...

In reply, Sri Lanka reached the winning target making 153 for the loss of eight wickets when they had just 11 balls to spare...

Bangladesh made a meagre start as the hosts lost their early five wickets for 54 runs...

Nuwan Kulasekera gave his team early breakyhrough as the medium pacer dismissed opener Zunaed Siddique for just one run. He was caught behind by Kumar Sangakkara off Kulasekara...

Then, Kulasekera cleanly bowled wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim for four runs...

Skipper Mohammad Ashraful was caught behind by Sangakkara off Farveez Maharoof making 13 when Bangladesh's total was 34 for the loss of three wickets...

Kulasekera struck again as he dismissed Tamim Iqbal, the other opener for 18 runs. Tamim was caught behind by Sangakkara off Kulasekera when the team's total was 42 for the loss of four wickets.

Shakib Al Hasan, the dependable batsman of Bangladesh was also caught behind by Sangakkara off Thilina Thushara scoring nine for the loss of five wickets...

Later, Raqibul Hasan and Mahmudullah Riad improved their position contributing together 44 runs in the sixth wicket stand before Mahmudullah Riad was cleanly bowled by Muttiah Muralitharan scoring 26 when the team's total was 98 for the loss of six wickets...

Riad hit two fours and a six in his 36-ball knock...

Then, Raqibul Hasan and Naeem Islam tried to repair the damage adding together 53 runs for the seventh wicket partnership before Naeem Islam was caught at the mid off by Jehan Mubarak off Ajantha Mendis hitting 21 when the board was giving a reading of 151 for the loss of seven wickets...

Raqibul Hasan remained undefeated with 43 off 107 balls...

After dismissal of Naeem, Ajantha Mendis and Muralitharan played the key role to cut short the host's innings...

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza was caught at the mid wicket by Chamara Kapugedera off Ajantha Mendis before scoring any run.

Nazmul Hossain was trapped lbw by Muralitharan for a duck...

Then, Rubel was dismissed by Mendis for nought and tthe innings of Bangladesh came to an end.

Nuwan Kulasekera and Ajantha Mendis grabbed three wickets for 19 and 24 runs respectively while Muttiah Muralitharan finished at 2/33

Banladesh bowlers made a formidable start as the tourists lost their early five wickets for just six runs...

One down Kumar Sangakkara led his team from the frontline knocking a patient 59 off 133 balls amid six fours before he was caught and bowled by Shakib Al Hasan. Kumar Sangakkara was adjudged the Man of the Match for his sparkle innings. when Sangakkara returned to the pavilion, Sri Lanka's total was 114 for the loss of seven wickets...

Later, Shakib cleanly bowled Kulasekera for a duck and Sri Lanka was tottering at 114 for the loss of eight wickets. Shakib Al Hasan was adjudged the player of the series...

Farveez Maharoof and Muttiah Muralitharan guided their team to anchor in the herbour...

Maharoof hit a 38 (not out) off 76 balls including four fours and two huge sixes...

Muralitharan made his task easy as he earned 20 runs from Rubel Hossain's eighth over (Bangladesh's 46th over) and then, Muralitharan collected 12 runs from Rubel's ninth over (Bangladesh's 48th over)...

Those two costly overs paid Bangladesh heavily and the Tigers had to satisfy with the runners-up trophy...

Medium pacer Nazmul Hossain plucked three wickets giving away 30 runs while Shakib Al Hasan took two wickets for 22 runs...
