Jessore GOC, pilot killed in chopper crash


General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Jessore Cantonment Maj Gen Rafiqul Islam and pilot Lt Col Shahid were killed in an army helicopter crash in Tangail this (Monday) morning.

Maj Saif who was also travelling in the helicopter was injured critically, reports our Tangail correspondent.

Local people and witnesses said the helicopter, which was going to Dhaka from the Jessore Cantonment, first hit an electric pole at Rouha village in Kalihati upazila then collapsed on a banyan tree and later plunged into a pond at about 8:00am.

The two army officers died on the spot.

Immediately after the accident, local people rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation. They rescued the injured army official from the damaged helicopter and sent him to the Tangail General Hospital in critical condition.

The locals also sent the bodies of the two army officials to the hospital after rescuing.

Later, an army team from Jamuna Cantonment, an army rescue team from Ghatail Cantonment, an Air Force rescue team from Pahar Kanchanpur Air Force Base, a fire service team, police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) immediately rushed to the spot and started rescue operations.

The injured army officer later has been shifted to the Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH) by another army helicopter.

The bodies of the two army officials, however, were taken to the Jamuna Cantonment from the Tangail General Hospital, sources in the army said.

After the accident, General Officers Command of Ghatail Cantonment Maj Gen AKM Mujahiduddin, Comander of 98 Composite Brigade Brig Gen Nasimul Gani, Lt Col Shakil Ahmed Biswas, Tangail Suprerindent of Police Abdul Mannan, Tangail Deputy Commissioner Maksudur Rahman Patwari, Tangail Rab Camp Commander Maj Nasir Uddin rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue operations.

The reason behind the crash could not be known immediately.
