Babar lands in jail

A Dhaka court today sent former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar to jail after his surrender before the trial court as per the Supreme Court (SC) directive in connection with an arms case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Moazzem Hossain sent Babar, also a BNP leader, to jail saying that he has no jurisdiction to pass any order on the bail petition as Babar was earlier convicted for 17 years' in the case.

The High Court (HC) yesterday directed Babar to surrender before the trial court as per the SC order in the case rejecting his petition seeking bail extension as his three-month bail tenure expired.

On October 16, 2007, the HC granted Babar a six-month bail on health grounds in the case following a pending appeal against the trial court verdict.

However, the SC on October 23 revised the HC order and granted him bail for three months and directed him to surrender before the trial court within the time.
